Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - South English, IA.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near South English which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
