There are substance abuse programs offered in or near St. Charles which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
