Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Stanley, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Stanley that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
