There are substance abuse programs offered in or near State Center that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
