Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Struble, IA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Struble which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
