Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Vincent, IA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Vincent which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
