There are substance abuse programs available in or near Whittemore that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
