Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Yale, IA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Yale which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
