There are substance abuse programs available in or near Almo that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
