Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Arimo, ID.

There are programs offered in or near Arimo which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is encouraged.
