There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Boise that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is encouraged.
