Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Dietrich, ID.

There are programs offered in or near Dietrich that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will instead not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is encouraged.
