Regular out-patient treatment is usually a less costly alternative to more comprehensive outpatient centers or inpatient treatment, and is the lowest intensity of formal substance abuse treatment available in Harvard. Some clients are in treatment for their first time and have chosen regular outpatient because that is all they can afford and time commitment and scheduling because of school, work or other obligations. For many, regular outpatient is a "step-down" to service following treatment in a more intensive outpatient program such as a partial hospitalization or inpatient facility.
Regular outpatient rehabilitation options usually offer group and individual counseling services occurring once or twice a week. Centers which offer a more diverse array of services may include counseling (CBT) to assist with relapse prevention and dual diagnosis services to help address co-occurring addiction and mental health issues. The length of time an individual remains involved in recovery can change from client to client, and a person's progress can be judged every now and then and more treatment can be recommended based on these findings.
In many situations, a regular outpatient rehabilitation program may be deficient in intensity for an individual who is addressing a bad alcohol and drug issue and has never gone to recovery previously or has relapsed following prior outpatient treatment.
