There are programs offered in or near Lowman which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
