Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Midvale, ID.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Midvale that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
