There are substance abuse programs available in or near Shelley that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
