Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Spirit Lake, ID.

There are programs offered in or near Spirit Lake that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
