Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Arcola, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Arcola which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
