Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Bedford Park, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Bedford Park which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
