Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Cedarville, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Cedarville that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
