Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Compton, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Compton that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
