Short Term alcohol and drug rehabilitation is a term used for addiction treatment that is brief, and lasts from 14 to 30 days in either an inpatient or residential rehabilitation facility. Because treatment is not long, it is a great financial option in most cases and for individuals who can't commit to long-term treatment.
Most short-term drug rehabilitation facilities in Cuba offer intensive group and individual counseling and psychotherapy which in the context of addiction treatment is basically relapse prevention. Because of the brief time clients are in treatment, most individuals will need to go through total detox before beginning treatment. One of the disadvantages of treatment at a short-term substance abuse rehab center is that individuals may still be in the initial stages of withdrawal and may not be able to focus as well as someone who has stabilized and detoxed fully. This can make treatment within the specific timeframe much harder as individuals may be moody and physically uncomfortable while experiencing intense cravings.
Recidivism rates are understandably higher among individuals who only get short term treatment as opposed to long term. Clients who participate in short term substance abuse rehabilitation and then transition into an intensive outpatient program or day treatment center have better odds of staying sober because they will maintain a support system while they transition to a sober lifestyle.
