Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - East Dubuque, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in East Dubuque which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
