Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - El Paso, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in El Paso that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
