Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Evergreen Park, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Evergreen Park that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
