Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Findlay, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Findlay that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
