Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Granville, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Granville that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
