Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Huey, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Huey that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
