Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Loves Park, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Loves Park which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
