Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Marengo, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Marengo which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
