Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Monroe Center, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Monroe Center which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
