Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Springfield, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Springfield which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
