Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Vermilion, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Vermilion which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
