Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Woodridge, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Woodridge which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
