Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Batesville, IN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Batesville that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
