Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Berne, IN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Berne which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
