Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Brook, IN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Brook which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
