Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Fairland, IN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Fairland which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
