Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Fredericksburg, IN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Fredericksburg that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
