Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Gas City, IN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Gas City that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
