Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Grass Creek, IN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Grass Creek that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
