Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Hymera, IN.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Hymera which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
