Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Kendallville, IN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Kendallville which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
