Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Liberty, IN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Liberty that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
