Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Macy, IN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Macy that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
