Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Montezuma, IN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Montezuma that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
