Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Oakland City, IN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Oakland City which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
