Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Paxton, IN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Paxton which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
