Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Preble, IN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Preble that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
