Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Reynolds, IN.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Reynolds which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
